ESL & Life Skills

Helping Our Neighbors Build Stronger Lives

Vickery Meadow and the surrounding 75231 area are home to people from many nations, languages, and cultures. Some families have lived in Dallas for many years. Others are immigrants or refugees who are building a new life in a new place. Many are working hard, raising children, learning English, looking for better jobs, and trying to understand systems that can feel confusing.

At our church, we believe this is one of the ways God calls us to love our neighbors.

Our ESL and Life Skills ministry exists to help adults, children, and families grow in confidence, communication, practical wisdom, and hope. We want people to feel welcomed, respected, and supported as they learn the skills they need for everyday life.

Why ESL Matters

Learning English can open many doors.

English helps parents talk with teachers, doctors, employers, neighbors, and community leaders. It helps adults apply for jobs, understand instructions, read signs, fill out forms, and speak with confidence.

But ESL is more than vocabulary and grammar. It is about dignity. It is about helping people find their voice in a new place.

Our goal is to provide a friendly, patient, and respectful place where people can practice English without fear or embarrassment.

Why Life Skills Matter

Many families in our community face real-life challenges every week. Some need help understanding school systems. Some need help preparing for work. Some need help managing money, reading forms, making appointments, or learning how to find community resources.

Life skills training helps people move from survival toward stability.

Possible topics may include:

  • Budgeting and saving
  • Job readiness
  • Interview preparation
  • Workplace expectations
  • Parenting support
  • Helping children succeed in school
  • Understanding basic forms and documents
  • Navigating healthcare, transportation, and community services
  • Building healthy relationships
  • Making wise decisions in daily life

We do not come as people who have all the answers. We come as neighbors, servants, and friends.

Helping Children and Youth

Children in immigrant, refugee, and lower-income families often carry heavy responsibilities. Some are learning English while also trying to keep up in school. Some help translate for parents. Some are adjusting to a new culture while still honoring the culture of their home.

We want children and youth to know they are seen, loved, and valued.

Through tutoring, reading support, mentoring, and safe group activities, we want to help young people grow in confidence, character, and hope.

Our desire is to help children succeed in school, build healthy friendships, and discover that God has a good purpose for their lives.

Our Christian Motivation

We serve because Jesus first loved us.

The Bible teaches us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. ESL and Life Skills ministry is one practical way we obey that command.

Loving God

We love God by using our time, gifts, language, education, and experience to serve others. We believe every person is made in the image of God and deserves kindness, patience, and respect.

Loving People

We love people by meeting real needs. Sometimes love looks like teaching English. Sometimes it looks like helping someone read a document. Sometimes it looks like sitting with a parent who is worried about a child. Sometimes it looks like listening.

Making Disciples

As relationships grow, we also share the hope we have in Jesus Christ. We do not pressure people. We serve with humility, honesty, and love. We want people to experience both practical help and spiritual hope.
