What the Bible Teaches About Salvation
Salvation is God’s rescue plan for sinful people. The Bible teaches that God created us for Himself, but sin separated us from Him. We cannot save ourselves by religion, morality, or good works. But God, in His love and grace, sent Jesus Christ to save us through His death, burial, and resurrection.
At Forest Meadow Baptist Church, we believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith in Jesus Christ alone. This salvation brings forgiveness, new life, adoption into God’s family, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and a new way of living as a disciple of Jesus.
Key Scripture: 1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Ephesians 2:8–10; John 3:16; Romans 10:9–13
God Created Us for Himself
God created the world good. Human beings were made in His image. We were created to know God, love God, worship God, represent God, and live in fellowship with Him.
Scripture References

God says His people were created for His glory. - Revelation 4:11, NLT
All things exist because God created them.
Sin Separated Us from God
Humanity rebelled against God. Because of sin, we experience guilt, shame, fear, broken relationships, spiritual death, and separation from God.
The problem is not only that we commit sins. The deeper problem is that we are sinners in need of rescue.
Scripture References
- Genesis 3:6–10, NLT
Adam and Eve sinned, became ashamed, and hid from God. - Romans 3:23, NLT

Apart from Christ, we are spiritually dead because of sin. - Jeremiah 17:9, NLT
The human heart is deeply broken by sin.
We Cannot Save Ourselves
No amount of religion, morality, church attendance, good intentions, or personal effort can remove our sin. Salvation is not earned. It is received by grace.
Scripture References
- Ephesians 2:8–9, NLT
God saves us by grace when we believe, not as a reward for good works. - Titus 3:5, NLT
God saves us because of His mercy, not because of our righteous deeds. - Romans 3:20, NLT
The law shows us our sin, but cannot make us right with God. - Isaiah 64:6, NLT
Even our righteous deeds are not enough to cleanse us.
Jesus Christ Is the Only Savior
Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He became fully human while remaining fully God. He lived without sin. He died on the cross as our substitute. He was buried. He rose bodily from the dead. He ascended to the Father and will return in glory.
His death satisfies the justice of God. His resurrection proves His victory over sin and death.

The Word was God, and the Word became human. - Colossians 2:9, NLT

Salvation Is by Grace Through Faith
We are saved by God’s grace, not by our works. We receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Faith means trusting who Jesus is and relying on what He has done.
Scripture References
- Ephesians 2:8–9, NLT

We are made right with God by faith in Christ, not by works of the law.
Repentance and Faith Belong Together
True faith turns to Christ. True repentance turns away from sin. Repentance does not mean we clean ourselves up before coming to Jesus. It means we come honestly, surrendering ourselves to Him.
Scripture References
- Mark 1:15, NLT
“Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” - Acts 3:19, NLT
Repent and turn to God so sins may be wiped away. - Acts 20:21, NLT

Baptism Is the Public Sign of New Life
Baptism does not save us, but it is a commanded act of obedience. It publicly identifies the believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

Salvation Leads to Discipleship
Jesus did not command us merely to make converts. He commanded us to make disciples. A saved person begins learning to obey Jesus in every area of life.

Jesus commanded us to make disciples and teach them to obey. - Luke 9:23, NLT

How Can I Be Saved?
The Bible says we must turn from sin and trust in Jesus Christ.
You do not have to clean yourself up before coming to Jesus. You come to Him honestly. You confess your sin. You trust that Jesus died for you and rose again. You receive Him as Savior and Lord.
- Romans 10:9–10, NLT teaches that if you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
- Romans 10:13, NLT says, “Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.”
A Simple Prayer of Faith
God, I know that I have sinned.
I know I cannot save myself.
I believe Jesus died for my sins and rose from the dead.
I turn from my sin and trust in Jesus as my Savior and Lord.
Forgive me, make me new, and help me follow Jesus.
Amen.
